WHAT ARE VITAMINS?
There are 13 vitamins which are essential molecules for normal cell function, growth, and development. They cannot be synthesized in adequate amounts by the body so we normally need to obtain them regularly through diet. Vitamins can be divided into water (C and B1 2 3 5 6 7 9 12) and fat (A D E K) soluble. Water soluble vitamins are not stored in the body so we must obtain them on a regular basis.
WHAT CAN THEY DO?
Vitamins play diverse roles in the body, including acting as regulators of cell and tissue growth and differentiation (vitamin A), functioning as enzyme cofactors or precursors (B-complex vitamins), serving as antioxidants (vitamin C and E), supporting bone metabolism (vitamin K), and supporting blood clotting (vitamin K).
