PRIMARY CARE SERVICES
Leo, our medical director and family all-ages Nurse Practitioner, provides the care that you and your family need to live, grow, and play.

WHAT IS PRIMARY CARE?
Primary care is the often the first point of contact for individuals and families and the healthcare system. It involves health promotion, illness and injury prevention, management of chronic disease, prescription of medication & diagnostic imaging, and the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease.
Primary care providers work collaboratively with their patients and other members and teams within the healthcare system to optimize the care patients receive.
WHAT IS A NURSE PRACTITIONER?
Nurse Practitioners have been practicing in Alberta since the 1970s but only recently did Health Canada and the Alberta Government officially change how Nurse Practitioners receive financial compensation. Up until recently, Nurse Practitioners could not be paid directly for their work by the health authority which prevented widespread adoption and knowledge of the role.
Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses with years of clinical experience who obtain graduate degrees in nursing. On completion of these programs and registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta, they are granted the authority to practice with an expanded scope autonomously and independently.
PERKS
At HUMANOLOGIE HEALTH&WELLNESS, our healthcare practitioners believe that each person is more than just their illness or "presenting complaint." You are a whole person and that whole person deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for in a collaborative way. Establishing, maintaining, and learning from the therapeutic relationship is part of the primary care process of Nurse Practitioners. We see, we hear, we care.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN A NURSE PRACTITIONER REPLACE MY FAMILY PHYSICIAN?
Nurse practitioners are not here to replace anybody. If you have access to a family doctor, that is awesome! Family doctors are highly trained professionals and we are so grateful for their expertise and dedicated service to patients.
Nurse Practitioners want to help Albertans that are struggling to find access to safe, effective, continuous primary care services. Nurse practitioners can autonomously and independently provide many primary care services such as prescribing medications, requesting diagnostic tests like blood work and imaging, diagnosing and treating illnesses and chronic conditions, and many more.
We know that nobody can do it all. HUMANOLOGIE HEALTH&WELLNESS is a collaborative venture. We happily and readily refer our patients to the care and expertise of our colleagues in the healthcare field, such as dieticians, physiotherapists, specialists, and so on.
WHAT IS THE PRICE FOR PRIMARY CARE SERVICES?
Thanks to the collaboration between the federal and provincial governments, primary care services provided by Nurse Practitioners are now insured services. When a Nurse Practitioner agrees to participate in the Primary Care Program, most primary care services are covered by Alberta Healthcare and there is no fee to patients.
There are some uninsured services, and these include sick notes, form completion, and rarely, specialized interventions; these services will be clearly identified if applicable.
