WHAT DO NEUROMODULATORS DO?

Neuromodulators have many medical and cosmetic applications. Neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Letybo, and Nuceiva block the release of acetylcholine in your muscles by causing the cleavage of a protein called SNAP25! Acetylcholine is essential for muscle contraction and other nerve terminal functions.

WHY WOULD WE WANT TO REDUCE MUSCLE CONTRACTION AND DAMPEN OVERACTIVE NERVE TERMINALS?

Muscle contraction can cause or worsen wrinkles, furrows, and creases in our skin such as around and between the eyes and on the forehead.

Overactive muscles can contribute to a downturned smile, a gummy smile, sagging jowls and neck, a dimpled or creased chin, and decreased lip size.

Overactive muscles can contribute to jaw pain, headaches, tight neck muscles, overactive bladder, excessive blinking, and hyperactive retraction of the penis and scrotum.

Overactive nerve terminals can cause hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), premature ejaculation, and flushing skin.

HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS LAST?

There are a variety of factors that affect efficacy and longevity of treatment. Each person, each muscle, each injection depth, each dosage, and each medication can play a role. Ideal duration is 3 months. If your treatments aren't lasting that long, there are a number of ways to potentiate or improve duration. These can be discussed during your appointment.

Please do not get neuromodulator treatments more frequently than every 3 months as you may develop diminishing results or tolerance to the product.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

With all medications and treatments, there are risks involved. Headache, flu-like symptoms, feeling of heaviness where you were injected, bruising, swelling, and bleeding are relatively common side effects that typically resolve without incident. Infection is a rare side effect but is possible. Sometimes, muscles that weren't intended to be injected may be affected by the neuromodulator. This can result in things like drooping eyelids, upper eyelid or brow droop/drop, an uneven smile, or a bulging muscle. Nearby muscles that were at one time inhibited by the strength of a muscle that is now relaxed can compensate and become more prominent. There are varying degrees of treatments for these complications that you can discuss with your injector.

Everybody's body is different and muscles are often located with millimeters of each other. Further, people can respond differently to the products used. Follow-ups at the two week point are essential as they help us figure out what products/patterns/techniques work best for you.
